Could there be a changing of the guard in the American Division of the Suburban League this season? The Highland Hornets have been in complete domination of the league over the past several years but they will lose a huge chunk of their state-qualifying lineup from 2023. Highland will turn to junior Elizabeth Coleman to take the reigns from their graduated seniors. They will have some experienced players back and will see who is ready for the spotlight. Highland will be involved in what could be a very tight race for conference supremacy. Gracyn Vidovic from Aurora will be in strong contention for conference Player of the Year. The Greenmen will have a lot to replace as well, however, and will join Revere and Kent Roosevelt as Highland’s stiffest competition. Revere has a young core of players with some experienced veterans and they have the potential to have a special year in 2024. Kent Roosevelt will follow wherever Ashlyn Leavery takes them and will need some of their young players to take a step forward. Copley and Tallmadge may round out the American Division but both teams look to be much improved from last season.
After winning the National Division last year, Hudson will look to repeat as they return a good chunk of players, including Emmy Burling, Julia Van Bokkelen, Elena Varga, and McKenna Kiewatt from their state qualifying team in 2023. Nordonia and Stow will both have something to say about that, though, as both have very strong top players. Julia Gulla from Nordonia is the defending National Conference Player of the Year and Olivia Berlingieri from Stow will look to improve off a season where she individually was able to qualify for the District Tournament. Solon will be in the same boat as Nordonia and Stow, where they will have a superstar player they will need to surround with talent. Serena Wu qualified for the State Tournament last year and will lead the Comets again in 2024. The Bears of North Royalton will use an alternative method to compete this fall. Chloe Yoon stepped up last year as the undisputed best player for North Royalton and they will use an immense amount of depth to supplement her abilities. Brecksville will have a new coach, former standout player Sylvia Stibley, and will be improved over last season. Wadsworth will turn to new girls coach Steve Farris to try to turn the team around from a tough season last year and Twinsburg will also be building for the future.

Head Coach- Collin McEndree Last Year’s Results- 1st at Old Avalon Sectional, 5th at Brookledge District, 2nd Place in Suburban League Coach’s Comments- Really looking to build upon our tough district finish at the end of the year last year, and really break through and get the team to state. We have a great solid core of our players returning, with some new freshmen looking to make a splash and add to our depth. We are very lucky to have Gracyn Vidovic (our state qualifier from last year) leading the team with her other senior teammates, as we set our eyes on winning the Suburban League and getting to state as a team this year.

Head Coach- Bobby Bolin Last Year’s Results- 3rd at Fox Den Sectional, 3rd at Brookledge District, 7th at State Tournament, Suburban League National Champions Coach’s Comments- We had our best finish in school history last year and are looking to build off that. We need to replace the talent and leadership of Sherry Du and Ellie Davis while building off the talent that Emmy Burling, Julia Van Bokkelen, Elena Varga, and McKenna Kiewatt bring. I look for seniors Hannah Lee, Annabel Lindley, and Brooke Harvey to take big strides this year.
Head Coach- Greg Harris Last Year’s Results- 4th at Fox Den Sectional, 11th at Brookledge District, 3rd in the Suburban League National Conference Coach’s Comments- We are looking to have a very good season with the 5 girls returning with significant varsity experience and all of them working hard on their games including playing in many summer tournaments.

The team returns up to 23 of 25 members from the 2023 season and has a record turnout of freshmen. Sixth year head coach Don Filips expects very competitive battles for spots on the 2024 varsity and junior varsity teams. Coach Filips is excited about the explosion of the popularity of girls golf at North Royalton and looks forward to the “NEXT SHOT” of the 2024 season!
Head Coach- Jeremy Harpley Last Year’s Results- 5th at Fox Den Sectional, Last year ended with a 5th place finish in a very competitive Sectional. Revere sent two ladies (M. Harpley and Mahajan) to Districts. RHS returns 9 letter winners (5 underclassmen) to lead the Team. Coach’s Comments- After a breakout year in 2023 our expectations are high. A good summer of golf, we look to expand on the foundation built last year. Further development of the Sophomores (Banning/Deo/Harpley, R/Addessi/Riley), stabilized by the District Qualifiers (Harpley, M/Mahajan) the Revere Women look to continue progress towards a District and State berth.
Head Coach- Damien Kopkas Last Year’s Results- 6th at Old Avalon Sectional, 3-4 overall, 5th place in Suburban League (National Division), Individual State Qualifier (Serena Wu) Coach’s Comments- Trying to replace 8 seniors from last year’s team has me truly looking forward to this coming season. I am excited to see who will step up and fill that void. The ultimate success of our season begins with individual state qualifier Serena Wu, who finished in 19th place at States and is coming off another stellar summer. The pieces of the puzzle behind her will fit into place throughout the season.
Head Coach- Scotte Rorabaugh Last Year’s Results- 5th at Old Avalon Sectional, Summit County Girls Invitational team champion and individual champion (Gabby Berlingieri)…Gabby Berlingieri (Sr.) shot 76-76–152 for T-17 in Division 1 State Championship…finished 2nd in Suburban League National Conference Coach’s Comments- We are looking forward to a good 2024 season. Despite losing our best player to graduation (state qualifier Gabby Berlingieri), our team returns four starters including Olivia Berlingieri (Jr) who qualified for Districts the past two years as an individual with her sister and Sophia Thompson (Sr).
Head Coach- Steve Ferris Last Year’s Results- 10th at Fox Den Sectional Coach’s Comments- We are looking forward to the season. Elle has a great chance to be All Suburban League.
Carrollton and Massillon were division champions in the Tri-County Conference in 2023 and will both look to repeat that task. Garaway is always a strong, non-Northeast District contender as well. For the Northeast District teams, Massillon should have a good chance to be on top of their division once again, as they return a team with a good amount of depth and consistency. Dover is a team that will be right up there with the Tigers, as the Tornadoes will be led by senior Miya Downing. Marlington will be competitive if they are able to find a quality fourth scorer. The Dukes will once again rely on superstar senior Zoe Mort to put up low numbers this fall. Canton South brings back a strong top of the lineup, and like Marlington, will need to supplement their top scorers. New Philadelphia, Northwest, Louisville, and West Branch are all in a rebuild but have promise for the future.

A school record 18 wins and only 2 losses! A 3rd Place finish at Sectionals was amazing and it sent us to Districts where we finished 5th! We also won our first two 18 Hole Tournaments ever! We Won The Griffth Cup at Spring Hills Golf Course, and I must give a giant THANK YOU to Laura Traganza from Northwest for inviting us, and SPRING HILLS GOLF COURSE for being the greatest host of a tournament I have ever seen! Me and my girls were blown away by your kindness and hope to see you more often! Thanks again Gary and Greg, and I encourage everyone to go visit SPRING HILLS!!! Coach’s Comments- After an Amazing and School record breaking season last year for the Wildcats, this 2024 team will look a little bit different. Head Coach- Laura Traganza Last Year’s Results- 11th at The Pines Sectional Coach’s Comments- Improving your game is a personal responsibility and takes effort.
The Western Reserve Conference could end up being a very competitive two team race in 2024. There are many young players, especially sophomores, to watch as the conference season progresses. Returning champion Kenston will face a significant challenge from the Mayfield Wildcats at the top of the conference. Kenston has a deeper lineup than Mayfield but the Wildcats have a little more star power at the top, especially after the special rookie year of Julie Paradise. Willoughby South could be more of a factor than they have in the past. Chardon is never a team to take lightly but they will need to improve from their effort last season. Eastlake North will have the best player in the conference, senior Lauren Iannetta, who could single-handedly make the Rangers competitive in the league. Another ripple in the conference is the Riverside Beavers, who haven’t had a full team in the past, but are building toward something that could be special. They will be a team to look out for as their program grows.
Impact Players
Sydney Barker (SO) Riverside Cameron Gerlica (JR) Chardon Lauren Iannetta (SR) Eastlake North Stefania Mighton (SO) Kenston Lucy Moran (JR) Mayfield Kaylee Naymik (SO) Riverside Michaela Nocera (SR) Willoughby South Julie Paradise (SO) Mayfield Ava Solak (SO) Kenston

Highland looks to keep the streak alive at Fox Den
The Highland Hornets have been dominant at the Fox Den Sectional, winning the tournament each year since 2020. This year looks to be no exception. Hudson, Walsh Jesuit, and Nordonia have the best chance to give Highland a run at the title but they will most likely be battling for second place. Last year, Nordonia edged out Hudson for second place on a tie breaker and used the momentum to propel them all the way to the State Tournament. Walsh Jesuit was kept out of advancing by a strong performance from the North Royalton Bears, a team that will look to make a similar run this year.
Isabella Goyette from Highland is the favorite to be the medalist for the third consecutive year. She has already set the course record and had a hole-in-one at the Fox Den Sectional and now looks to add to her legend. Paige McKendry and Elizabeth Coleman will add to Highland’s high flying attack, while senior Kavya Chada also hopes to have a very strong showing. Hudson will have Emmy Burling back after missing two weeks with an injury. Burling and Sherry Du combine for a formidable one-two punch for the Explorers, who have more depth than they’ve had in previous years, getting scores throughout the year from Julia Van Bokkelen, Elena Varga, and Ellie Davis. Walsh Jesuit will look to the veteran leadership of seniors Annie Stencel and Annie Cors along with the rising talent of Yumi Kohara and Colleen Stadler as they battle for one of the four qualifying spots. Julia Gulla from Nordonia could give Goyette the best run at the individual title. Gulla won the Suburban League National player of the year and would love to add a Sectional Championship to her resume. North Royalton will feature freshman Chloe Yoon and has their sites on jumping in for one of the final spots. Another team right on the brink is the Minutemen from Revere. They will showcase three freshmen with the intent of gaining valuable tournament experience.
Individual players that will contend for District berths include Emily Lamb, who has had a terrific season for Shaker Heights, Alexandria Vardon from Firestone, and several players from Revere, one potentially being junior Saumya Mahajan.
Things will be tight at Old Avalon
Low scores tend to abound during Sectionals Week in Warren. There are a good number of teams looking to take advantage of a scorable course on a day where the forecast looks to be ideal. Hathaway Brown lapped the field in 2022 but this year looks to have more parity. The Blazers still have Dixon Hill, one of the top players in Northeast Ohio, but lost two important scoring seniors to graduation. Blake Cody and company will look to support Hill and move on to Districts.
With the reemergence of Brooklyn Millard and the significant improvement of Gracyn Vidovic, Aurora has a dynamic duo that can compete with any top two players in the state. They will head to Old Avalon as the favorites. Millard and Vidovic will be supplemented by Manisha Girn and Nina Newkirk, both of whom have had some strong finishes this season.
One of the hottest teams in Northeast Ohio over the past two weeks have been the Stow Bulldogs. Stow won both the Summit County Cup and the final Suburban League National tournament and would love to add in a Sectional Championship. Behind sisters Gabby and Olivia Berlingieri, Sophia Thompson has been on fire recently, and the Bulldogs have been able to get fourth scores from Jules Leffel-Elliott and Lily Gualtiere.
Another team eyeing a spot at Brookledge in the District Tournament is the Rough Riders from Kent Roosevelt, who have shown some signs of brilliance this year but have also struggled on occasion. Maddie Kost can put up a low number and Kent will rely on Ashlyn Leavery and Izzi Wood to help give the team a chance to move on.
Other team contenders include the Cardinals from Canfield and the Comets from Solon. If Solon does not make it out of Sectionals, Serena Wu will be a heavy favorite to grab an individual spot along with several players from Canfield, including junior Miya Cohol and sophomore Chloe Leskovac. Another individual to watch for is Sophia Rivera from Boardman, who has experience at Districts from last year.
Who jumps in behind Magnificat at Springvale
Similar to Highland, Magnificat has the firepower to boat race the competition at Springvale. Behind national phenom Cara Heisterkamp and a cast of many, including Cammy Reed and Maureen O’Leary, Magnificat has more depth than any team in Northeast Ohio. The Blue Streaks have thrived under first year head coach Danny Gallagher and Sectionals should be just another step in the process to reach their ultimate goal.
The real storylines start after Magnificat as at least five teams will be battling for the final three spots. Greater Cleveland Conference foes Strongsville and Medina battled neck and neck the entire season with the Bees barely edging out the Mustangs for the conference title. The two teams tend to post very similar scores but do it in very different ways. Strongsville is led by standout senior Natalie Kostalnick and junior Hannah Lee, who both can go low on any given day. Medina brings a more balanced attack, although 2023 has proven to be a breakthrough year for senior Stella Burns. Medina features a lineup of all seniors who are all very similar players and that balance has benefited them this year.
St. Joseph Academy is a team that on a good day can also compete for that second spot at Springvale. Their style is nearly identical to Strongsville. Junior Gianna Reginelli will lead the way for the Jaguars but their fate may be in the hands of the performance of sophomore Emerson Glending, who has had a fine year up to this point. Rocky River is a formidable team featuring senior Chloe Holton and junior Mia Ginetti. The Pirates won the LEGGA this season and will look to get out of Sectionals as a team. Southwestern Conference champion Avon Lake is also in the mix to get into the top four. The Shoregals have five starters who can all step it up on any given day. Olivia Tobin, Ava Lamb, Sarah Quayle, Mia Machovina, and Olivia Ritter all could end up in the scoring column on Wednesday.
Outside of the players on contending teams, contenders for individual spots include Madigan O’Leary from Avon, Jessica Buzinski and Aislinn Leffel from Brunswick, and Lizzy Iliff from Amherst. On top of those candidates, players from Westlake, Olmsted Falls, and North Ridgeville will also have an outside chance of qualifying.
Federal League may dominate The Elms
Throughout the history of girls golf in Northeast Ohio, Stark County has been dominant most years. While the talent has spread out more over the past few seasons, there are some teams from the Elms Sectional that will make a splash at Districts. Hoover, a state qualifier from a year ago, will lead that Stark County charge. They return Ava Kemp and Kylie Porter and feature star freshman Ellie Hutzler, a threesome that will compete with anyone in Northeast Ohio. A good day from junior Alyssa Evans will mean Hoover is dominating the competition.
Districts would not be the same without the Polar Bears from Jackson. It looks like a good bet that they will also be making the trip from North Lawrence to Cuyahoga Falls next week. Cara Murphy has had a remarkable season and the team looks to be at full strength with Katie Sieverts, Milena Grametbauer, Charlotte Raketich and Katie O’Connell all healthy and ready to go.
There looks to be a decent gap from Hoover and Jackson to the rest of the field at The Elms. Lake has improved a significant amount throughout the season and Green has the pedigree to move on. Audrey Nichols and Evanne Mast will lead the Blue Streaks while Sydney Shocklee is the star of the show for the Bulldogs. They will be challenged by GlenOak, Louisville, and Cloverleaf for the final spots.
Individuals to watch for at The Elms include Zoe Mort, a very strong player from Marlington, Miya Downing from Dover, who will be playing in the Northeast District for year two now, Corrie Schorsten from GlenOak, and Peyton Biery from Louisville.
Best of luck to all Division 1 teams and players this week!
Team Winner- Highland Individual Medalist- Isabella Goyette (Highland) Congratulations to Colleen Stadler from Walsh Jesuit for hitting a hole-in-one on Hole 8!
East Canton will be led by junior Mia Steigerwald as their program continues to improve and build. Garaway will be the team to beat in the Inter Valley Conference. The Hornets will look to better their 2-12 league record and finish higher in the IVC standings in 2023.
Impact Players

Head Coach- J.D. Ryder Last Year’s Results- 7th at The Pines Sectional Coach Comments- In the upcoming year our program returns all of our players. We added one more player and I’m excited to see what Mia, Ella, Elyse, Charlie and Meghan will do this year!
In the final year of the Crown Conference, Walsh Jesuit is the heavy favorite to take home another conference title. The Warriors are returning all their scoring players from last year and are very high on incoming freshman Yumi Kohara. Walsh Jesuit was disappointed in their Sectional finish last year and will look to make that up in 2023. Lake Catholic and Beaumont are both in positions to be better than last year. NDCL will look to rebuild under new head coach Tiger Alexander. Padua will look to replace most of their roster, as they had a multitude of seniors graduate last season.

Head Coach- Tony Zampedro Last Year’s Results- 8th at Punderson Sectional, 7-1-1, Second Place Team Finish in Crown Conference
Coach Comments- We lost our #1 player Lauren Olenik who graduated, but our new team captain Theresa Lazanich is working hard and is poised to be a premier player in the region this year! Sophomores Emma and Ella are working hard at their games and will also be players to watch this season. Seniors Kayla and Alex enter their third year on the team and are steadily improving golfers so we have a great core group to remain competitive this year. I am truly excited about the new crop of players listed as new varsity players, all of whom show tremendous potential and desire to become solid golfers!
Head Coach- Tiger Alexander Last Year’s Results- 13th at Old Avalon Sectional Coach Comments- Our short-term goal this season is to create a positive and competitive environment for the student-athletes to compete in. Our long-term goal is to be competitive at the District and regional levels. That said, our student-athletes have been putting in work this off-season with their private instructors, gearing up for this upcoming season.
Head Coach- Bill Reilly, PGA Last Year’s Results- 5th at Fox Den Sectional, Crown Conf Champs 5th straight year, Annie Stencel 3 time Crown Conf POY, Annie Cors 2 Time All Conference Coach Comments- Our ladies are realizing that they belong in the District and State Tournaments and with the addition of Yumi Kohara (9) they may well do something about that! With Annie Stencel’s experience and Co-Captain Annie Cors there is a big upside to 2023.
The Federal League has historically been one of the most competitive conferences in the state of Ohio. While a couple traditional powers were in a rebuilding phase, the Hoover Vikings made a trip to Columbus and the Lake Blue Streaks had one of their best finishes in a long time. Hoover will have a chance to return to the State Tournament. Lake will have to rely on some younger players to step up. Perennial powers Jackson and Green will also look to get back to the top of the conference. GlenOak brings back a good amount of talent on their roster. Perry could be on the upswing under new coach Dan Pierce and Canton McKinley will also look to make strides in 2023.

Head Coach- Michael Yoder Last Year’s Results- 2nd at The Elms Sectional, 7th at Districts Coach Comments- We would like to build on the success we had last year and pass on the habits and culture of success to our younger players.
The Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference continues to grow and become more of a factor in the Northeast Ohio Girls Golf landscape. The league has good balance between the five teams, who are all growing programs. In 2023, the Champion Golden Flashes, coming off a District appearance, look to be the top team in the conference, followed closely by LaBrae, Garfield, under new coach Kevin Sponaugle, Newton Falls, and Mineral Ridge, who will have an influx of young players to add to their core.
Impact Players
Aubree Brunton (JR) Mineral Ridge Kennady Grace (SR) Champion Kayla Haynie (SR) Champion Kennedy Howard (JR) Newton Falls Madison Touart (JR) LaBrae Madison Woconish (SR) Garfield
Head Coach- Matt Vukovic/Zavier Bokan Last Year’s Results- No team last year Coach Comments- This will be the first season ever for the a girls’ team in McDonald. There is a lot to learn, but the girls are soaking things up like a sponge. This will be a fun year to show a lot of growth from everyone.
Head Coach- Nicholas Flaviano Last Year’s Results- 13th at Pine Lakes Sectional Coach Comments- Last year was only our second year for girls golf and we finished the season at 7-13; we improved immensely from year one.
The Columbiana Clippers have been the dominant team in their area over the last several years and are the heavy favorites to win the EOAC this season. The most impressive player in the conference, however, is United’s Mati Zines, who was the medalist at the District Tournament and finished 11th in the Division II State Tournament in Columbus. East Palestine and Southern Local round out the EOAC and will be looking to improve over last year’s results.
Impact Players

Head Coach- Chad Moreschi Last Year’s Results- 2nd at Pine Lakes Sectional, 9th at Districts, 12-3 regular season Coach Comments- Large young team this year. Lost 4 of top 6 from last year but with some excellent new and returning talent we fully expect to compete for Sectional crown again and make it to Districts.
Head Coach- Stacey Zines Last Year’s Results- 7th at Pine Lakes Sectional Coach Comments- We are just in our second full season as a girls team. We are young but eager to do well.
With the departure of Madison, the Western Reserve Conference will be down to five teams in 2023. Kenston is the defending champion but will need to surround returning player Annika Tutzer with some young talent in order to repeat. Mayfield finished second, but lost team leader Jillian Gambino to graduation. Incoming freshman Julie Paradise has good talent, but Gambino leaves big shoes to fill. Eastlake North returns District qualifier Lauren Iannetta and will challenge Kenston and Mayfield for the league crown. Chardon also will make their voice heard in the WRC as they will have potentially the deepest team in the conference. Willoughby South also has a chance to have an impact in the conference if they can find some improvement from last year. The WRC looks to be wide open for the taking this year and will prove to be one of the better conference races to watch.
