2025 Suburban League Preview

The same question gets asked every season: Will this be the year Highland takes a step back and lets another team into contention in the Suburban League’s American Division. Since 2019, the answer to that question has been “no”. The Hornets have won 13 of the past 16 league championships and even though on paper it looks like they may have to work hard to earn it, it’s hard to predict anything other than another league title in eastern Medina County. Elizabeth Coleman, one of Northeast Ohio’s finest players, will try to ensure that to be the case. The team with the best chance to knock the Hornets off their throne could be the Revere Minutemen. With an enthusiastic new coach in Mike Clark and one of the deepest group of juniors in the area, Revere is a team that can make a run. Kent Roosevelt is the only other team to have won the conference during Highland’s impressive run, having done so three times in a row starting in 2017. The Rough Riders are another team that does not rebuild but reloads. Behind senior Adrianna Mineo, Kent will look to challenge both Revere and Highland. Aurora returns several players but will not be able to replace all-everything talent Gracyn Vidovic. The Greenmen will be young but will also grow as the season progresses. Copley continues to make strides in the league and Tallmadge is in a complete rebuild in their final year in the Suburban League.

In the National Division, Hudson will be looking to win their third straight league title and fifth in the last six years. The Explorers lineup will feature junior Elena Varga along with senior McKenna Kiewatt and sophomores Molly Stock and Kiley Gorog. Incoming freshman Rachel Rush will also look to find a spot in Hudson’s starting lineup. Coach Greg Harris always gets the most out of his players, and his Nordonia Knights will once again be in direct competition with Hudson. Senior Natalie Barnes has developed into a quality top of the lineup player and will be joined by a much improved cast, including seniors Carley Sutton and Maddie Eisner along with junior Polly Loney. 2024 individual league champion Serena Wu will lead the Solon Comets, who will look to provide her with a strong supporting cast. North Royalton once again will be distinguished by having the deepest roster of any team in the state of Ohio. Brecksville is a team to watch out for as their program continues to trend in the right direction. Stow will have a young team eager to learn under coach Scotte Rorabaugh while Twinsburg and Wadsworth will be building for the future.

Girls Golf Tournament Roundup

Teams are starting to round into form as we hit the peak of the season. 2024 is proving to be an extremely competitive season with some big surprises.

(Please keep us updated on tournament results, team/individual accomplishments, and other interesting stories as they develop this season!)

Heading to the far east part of our coverage area, it is great to welcome the Brookfield Warriors as one of the newest girls golf teams in the state of Ohio. Brookfield is coached by Shawn Hammond and they have gotten off to a very respectable start. We will have an updated page for the Warriors on our site asap.

The week started off with the first of several co-ed events of the year at Arrowhead Golf Club. The host Hoover Vikings swept the tournament by winning on both the girls and boys side with nearly identical scores of 315 and 314 respectively. The boys defeated Canfield on a fifth score tiebreaker. For the girls, Ellie Hutzler, Ava Kemp, and Kylie Porter all shot in the 70s to pace the Vikings as they outplayed Dublin Jerome and Walsh Jesuit.

Hoover wasn’t done with just one tournament win. In historic Zoar, Ohio, the Norse of North Canton also won the Dover Lady Tornado Invitational, bettering their score from Arrowhead by one stroke. They beat second place Jackson by 20 shots. Kylie Porter’s even par 72 was four shots better than Jackson’s Cara Murphy, her closest competition. Led by an 87 from junior Olivia Gant, Lake managed to help the Federal League take all three of the top three spots in the tournament.

At Alliance Country Club, the North Royalton Bears claimed their first tournament victory of the season at the Marilyn Jackson Invitational, besting the Massillon Tigers by 24 strokes and the Louisville Leopards by another 16. Rena Steffas and Lily Pastore matched 95s to lead the Bears to a victorious team score of 387. Marlington’s Zoe Mort continued her impressive run as she claimed the medalist spot with a round of 81. Natalie Warner from Louisville finished second with a 94, one better than the Bear Pair.

Dublin Jerome brought their A team to Mill Creek and dominated the Canfield Invitational with a remarkable team score of 291. Walsh Jesuit edged out Canfield for the runner up spot by one stroke with a 323. Ellie Ryu added another first place trophy to her case as she carded an impressive 68. Scores were low across the board as Caitlyn Mundwiller from Jerome tied Magnificat’s Cammy Reed with a round of 70.

Hathaway Brown checked in with a win at the Chagrin Falls Invitational at Tanglewood as superstar Dixon Hill shot 72 for the Blazers. Look for a lot more news out of Tanglewood as they are under new ownership and have really dedicated themselves to supporting high school golf. Hathaway Brown took a big step forward as they pursue a deep run in the postseason.

At Spring Hills Golf Club in Clinton, the Northwest Indians hosted the Griffiths Cup. The Quakers of New Philadelphia were the tournament champions as they held off Massillon Perry by 10 strokes and the hosts from Northwest by 13. A three way tie for medalist included Sadie Villers from Northwest, Hailey Franks from Canton South, and Kiersten Creighton from New Philadelphia, all shooting rounds of 86.

The Suburban League had a quick turnaround as both the boys and girls headed out to Aurora to play the beautiful Club Walden. The American Division was once again won handily by Highland as they soared to a 31 stroke victory over Aurora, Kent Roosevelt, and Revere. The Hornets shot 314 while the others shot 345. Highland’s Elizabeth Coleman shared the top spot in the American Division with Gracyn Vidovic from Aurora, each shooting 73. The National Division didn’t put up the team scores to compete with Highland, but the individual scores were impressive. Serena Wu from Solon tied Olivia Berlingieri from Stow with three under par rounds of 69. Julia Gulla of Nordonia also went under par with a 71 and Emmy Burling from Hudson added an even par round of 72. Hudson held off Nordonia to win the National Division by two shots, 329 to 331. Hudson and Nordonia are now tied with one tournament victory each, while Highland has won both tournaments on the American side.

2024 Suburban League Preview

Could there be a changing of the guard in the American Division of the Suburban League this season? The Highland Hornets have been in complete domination of the league over the past several years but they will lose a huge chunk of their state-qualifying lineup from 2023. Highland will turn to junior Elizabeth Coleman to take the reigns from their graduated seniors. They will have some experienced players back and will see who is ready for the spotlight. Highland will be involved in what could be a very tight race for conference supremacy. Gracyn Vidovic from Aurora will be in strong contention for conference Player of the Year. The Greenmen will have a lot to replace as well, however, and will join Revere and Kent Roosevelt as Highland’s stiffest competition. Revere has a young core of players with some experienced veterans and they have the potential to have a special year in 2024. Kent Roosevelt will follow wherever Ashlyn Leavery takes them and will need some of their young players to take a step forward. Copley and Tallmadge may round out the American Division but both teams look to be much improved from last season.

After winning the National Division last year, Hudson will look to repeat as they return a good chunk of players, including Emmy Burling, Julia Van Bokkelen, Elena Varga, and McKenna Kiewatt from their state qualifying team in 2023. Nordonia and Stow will both have something to say about that, though, as both have very strong top players. Julia Gulla from Nordonia is the defending National Conference Player of the Year and Olivia Berlingieri from Stow will look to improve off a season where she individually was able to qualify for the District Tournament. Solon will be in the same boat as Nordonia and Stow, where they will have a superstar player they will need to surround with talent. Serena Wu qualified for the State Tournament last year and will lead the Comets again in 2024. The Bears of North Royalton will use an alternative method to compete this fall. Chloe Yoon stepped up last year as the undisputed best player for North Royalton and they will use an immense amount of depth to supplement her abilities. Brecksville will have a new coach, former standout player Sylvia Stibley, and will be improved over last season. Wadsworth will turn to new girls coach Steve Farris to try to turn the team around from a tough season last year and Twinsburg will also be building for the future.

Suburban League Preview

The Suburban League has seen a good amount of success over the past several years. In the American Division, Highland has been the class of the league for years, making multiple state appearances. They return every one of their scorers from last year, including superstar Isabella Goyette, fellow senior Paige McKendry, and incoming sophomore sensation Elizabeth Coleman. Aurora, under new coach Collin McEndree, will be knocking at the door, especially with the return of Brooklyn Millard, who individually finished second in the state two years ago before moving out of state. Gracyn Vidovic has had a great summer and will have a huge impact on the league this year. Kent Roosevelt always has a strong team and will see the return of coach Bryan Harvey. Revere is a team to watch as they keep getting better by the year and will be under the leadership of new coach Jeremy Harpley. Copley returns several key pieces from last year’s squad and Tallmadge, also with a new coach in Ali Eads, will also be hoping to improve as the season progresses.

In the National Division, Nordonia made their first ever trip to the State Tournament last year. They will have some work to do to make a return after losing two strong seniors to graduation. Julia Gulla will look to be the National Division Player of the Year for the second straight season. Hudson will also look to replace senior Lizzy Grant, although they return their other top three scorers, Emmy Burling, Sherry Du, and Julia Van Bokkelen. Stow will be led by sisters Gabby and Olivia Berlingieri and will rely on Sophia Thompson for their third score. North Royalton is also a program on the rise as they have immense depth and will hope for one of their experienced players to take the next step after making a run to Districts last year. Another wild card will be the Solon Comets, coming over from the Greater Cleveland Conference. They will be without 2023 graduate Kaitlin Kormuth, but will turn to Serena Wu to lead the team. Brecksville, Wadsworth, now under the direction of Will Virgin, and Twinsburg will round out the National Division.

Last Year’s Results- 4th at Fox Den Sectional, 12th at Districts, The Bears were district qualifiers by finishing 4th at the Fox Den Sectional. The Bears were 6-2 in match play this season and finished fourth in the ultra competitive Suburban League which saw three National league teams make it to district competition. The Bears finished in 4th place in all four tournaments (355, 375, 335, 365) including a sizzling 335 which was one stroke off the school record. The team also competed in the Lady Pirate Invitational (3rd place 401), Lady Rider (8th place 387), Flamingo Frenzy (11th 387), Blue Devil Classic (18th 389), and the EBC / TriCounty Tournament (5th 362). The Bears teamed up with Nordonia to defeat St. Joseph and Brunswick in the 3rd Annual Jim Rademaker Ryder Cup.

Coach Comments- Returning lettermen senior Malia Weatherbie and Mia Whitt will look to fill out to the top of the Bears line up that graduated their top four players from the 2022 season. Both players ended the 2022 seaon on an ascending tragetory and will look to fill a leadership role in 2023. Rising sophomore and returning letterman Ava Grugle will look to secure her spot in the Bears lineup. Rising junior Sam Macek will try to parlay her 2022 varsity experience to earn a starting role in the 2023 lineup.

The Bears had one of the largest rosters in northeast Ohio which featured 26 golfers in 2022. Coach Filips expects the group of returners and talented incoming freshmen to battle for all the varsity sports. Those spots are out there for the all the players to earn. He is very excited about the upcoming team and their potential.

We are looking forward to a fresh start in a very challenging new conference (Suburban).

Stow-Munroe Falls Bulldogs
