The same question gets asked every season: Will this be the year Highland takes a step back and lets another team into contention in the Suburban League’s American Division. Since 2019, the answer to that question has been “no”. The Hornets have won 13 of the past 16 league championships and even though on paper it looks like they may have to work hard to earn it, it’s hard to predict anything other than another league title in eastern Medina County. Elizabeth Coleman, one of Northeast Ohio’s finest players, will try to ensure that to be the case. The team with the best chance to knock the Hornets off their throne could be the Revere Minutemen. With an enthusiastic new coach in Mike Clark and one of the deepest group of juniors in the area, Revere is a team that can make a run. Kent Roosevelt is the only other team to have won the conference during Highland’s impressive run, having done so three times in a row starting in 2017. The Rough Riders are another team that does not rebuild but reloads. Behind senior Adrianna Mineo, Kent will look to challenge both Revere and Highland. Aurora returns several players but will not be able to replace all-everything talent Gracyn Vidovic. The Greenmen will be young but will also grow as the season progresses. Copley continues to make strides in the league and Tallmadge is in a complete rebuild in their final year in the Suburban League.
In the National Division, Hudson will be looking to win their third straight league title and fifth in the last six years. The Explorers lineup will feature junior Elena Varga along with senior McKenna Kiewatt and sophomores Molly Stock and Kiley Gorog. Incoming freshman Rachel Rush will also look to find a spot in Hudson’s starting lineup. Coach Greg Harris always gets the most out of his players, and his Nordonia Knights will once again be in direct competition with Hudson. Senior Natalie Barnes has developed into a quality top of the lineup player and will be joined by a much improved cast, including seniors Carley Sutton and Maddie Eisner along with junior Polly Loney. 2024 individual league champion Serena Wu will lead the Solon Comets, who will look to provide her with a strong supporting cast. North Royalton once again will be distinguished by having the deepest roster of any team in the state of Ohio. Brecksville is a team to watch out for as their program continues to trend in the right direction. Stow will have a young team eager to learn under coach Scotte Rorabaugh while Twinsburg and Wadsworth will be building for the future.
