Welcome to This Week in Golf (TWIG). We are looking to highlight special moments, school records, impactful people, and other unique stories as the golf season unfolds. We don’t hear about everything, so if there is something you would like to be included, please reach out to us on social media or email us with a small recap of what you would like to be posted.

Tournament Results

We are trying to keep tabs on all tournament scores. We will have separate pages for Conference Tournaments and Regular Tournaments. Any scores that are not posted, please feel free to send over (bolinr@hudson.k12.oh.us). Unfortunately, we aren’t able to post scores from 9 hole matches as there are too many to keep track of.

Westlake Demons

Sometimes appearing as an underrepresented team, Westlake has had a sneaky good season. The Demons recently won the first ever Cleveland West Conference Championship at Big Met and have had a very successful fall. Westlake has relied on seniors Riley Knapp and Quinn Raese to lead the team along with veteran junior Izzy Kessler. Freshman Claire Bir has had a huge impact on the team this season average around 46 shots per nine holes.

Another Amazing Terlesky Invitational

The 11th anniversary of the Christine Terlesky Lake Club Girls Golf Invitational was held
Monday, September 14 at the Lake Club in Poland. Nineteen girls high school teams
participated in this special event in honor of Christine Terlesky, a beloved Boardman teacher
and coach who passed away in 2020 after a 7 1/2 year battle with ALS.

In Division I, Lake High School won their first Terlesky title with a team score of 345. Jackson
was the runner-up with a score of 349 followed by North Royalton (367) and 4th place GlenOak
(376). Kent Roosevelt took fifth place (377), Howland and Highland were tied for sixth place
(401), Boardman was eight (423), Hubbard placed ninth (428), and Fitch rounded out the
scoring with a team score of 461. The top three individuals in scoring were Lake’s Audrey
Goebelt shooting 80, Lake’s Charlie Brohpy second with an 81, and Jackson’s Scarlet Houck
third shooting 84.

Boardman was the host school of the tournament and their scores were: Gianna Ross (89),
Stella Mitchell (97), Gigi Anguili (118), and Lena Anguilla (119).

In Division 2, Southeast won for the third year in a row with a team score of 367. Champion
was the runner-up (373), Columbiana finished third (374), Lakeview placed fourth (379), South
Range finished fifth (398), Poland was sixth (412), West Branch placed seventh (440), Ursuline
was eighth (446), and Niles rounded out the scoring with a team score of 472. The top three
individuals in scoring were Champion’s Avery Robinette setting an Invitational Record with a
score of 75. The previous record was 79 held by Poland’s Sophia Yurich in 2021 and
Hubbard’s Jackie Adler in 2019. Columbiana’s Claire Banner finished in second shooting an
81. Maddie Jackson from Columbiana and Champion’s Brilea Woods tied for third shooting
87.

The tournament raises funds for two scholarships in Christine’s name. A $1,000 scholarship
each to a deserving Boardman senior in both basketball and golf is given out at the senior
honors assembly held in the spring.

Tournament Director Denise Gorski thanked all those who make this tournament very special
and a highly recognized golf tournament in the state. Gorski said, “My husband Dan and I
thank Ed and Chris Muransky, owners of the Lake Club for allowing us to start this event 11
years ago. At that time it was to raise medical funds for Christine and her family, and now it’s
for these two scholarships in basketball and golf. The entire Lake Club staff does such a
fabulous job putting on a first class event. Special thanks to Don Confey, Director of Golf and
Chris Bellino, assistant golf pro on running the tournament. Special thanks also to Shelly
LaBerto from Chick-fil-a Tiffany Square Plaza for donating the lunches, and Steve Cocca for
the pizza donations after our practice round on Sunday.

And finally, Gorski highly complimented the sponsors, some who have contributed since the
first year of the tournament. She said, “these sponsorships allow us to continue having this
event at the Lake Club plus help to raise the additional funds for the scholarships. We could’t
do it without you all year after year.”

Division 1 Seeding

The Division 1 seeding meetings took place this past Tuesday and, like the D2 meetings last week, were quick and productive. Teams not seeded were placed geographically at Sectional sites. Division 1 and 2 sites are up on the Northeast District Athletic Board website.

Hole in One!

Congratulations to MacLaine Bell from Cloverleaf High School on making an ace on the 12th hole at Pine Valley Golf Course from 91 yards!
