Welcome to This Week in Golf (TWIG). We are looking to highlight special moments, school records, impactful people, and other unique stories as the golf season unfolds. We don’t hear about everything, so if there is something you would like to be included, please reach out to us on social media or email us with a small recap of what you would like to be posted.

Tournament Results

We are trying to keep tabs on all tournament scores. We will have separate pages for Conference Tournaments and Regular Tournaments. Any scores that are not posted, please feel free to send over (bolinr@hudson.k12.oh.us). Unfortunately, we aren’t able to post scores from 9 hole matches as there are too many to keep track of.

Conference Champions

Another round of conference champions have been crowned. Some of the bigger conferences in Northeast Ohio finished their league tournaments last week and there were some extraordinary highlights.

The biggest highlight came on Monday at Fox Den as Brunswick shot a stellar score of 300 in the final Greater Cleveland Conference tournament. They were led by a more than impressive 64 from their superstar Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble, but the full story also includes amazing rounds by Emma Gonzalez-Ribble with 74 and Rylee Roth with 75.

On Wednesday at Tanglewood, two champions were named in the Suburban League. Both Revere in the American Division and Hudson in the National Division swept their sides of the conference by winning all four tournaments. Amrita Deo of Revere tied with Kenston’s Stefania Mighton and Elena Varga from Hudson led their respective sides all shooting 78s. Mighton and Varga were honored with league Player of the Year commendations.

Avon Lake took home the Southwestern Conference tournament trophy with a gigantic win over second place Avon. The Shoregals had four of the top five scorers in the tournament at Seneca with Adalyn Becker taking medalist honors bringing in a score of 86. Avon Lake’s 359 was 36 strokes above the Eagles.

The Elms Country Club took no prisoners in the Federal League Postseason tournament. Scores were definitely higher than normal, but it was the Hoover Vikings who prevailed with a two stroke victory over the Lake Blue Streaks, winning with a score of 350 over 352. Hoover came back to claim a share of the overall league title while senior Ellie Hutzler took medalist honors to continue her incredible senior campaign.

Sectional Results

Sectional Tournaments have begun around the state of Ohio. Congratulations to Champion for winning the Sectional title at the first Northeast Ohio Sectional at Pine Lakes in Division 2. Avery Robinette of Champion was the medalist. Columbiana, Lakeview, and Bristol also punched their tickets to the District Tournament at Good Park. On the individual side, qualifiers were Claire Urchek from Maplewood, Abigail Hochendoner from Jackson-Milton, Audrey Beck from Salem, and Claire Whetstone from United, who defeated teammate Alaina Brewer and Ursuline’s Sophia Scianna in a three-way playoff.

Sectional Previews

Monday, September 28th

Division 1 at Big Met- Last year’s State runner-up Magnificat looks to take home yet another Sectional title. Avon, Brunswick, Orange, and St. Joseph Academy are the favorites to battle for the three remaining spots. Padua, Rocky River, and Strongsville will be outside contenders.

Division 1 at The Elms- Lake will look to avenge their second place finish to Hoover in the final Federal League tournament. Jackson and Avon Lake are the other two seeded teams competing. Other teams that could be in the mix are Cloverleaf, GlenOak, Green, Highland, Perry, Wooster.

Division 2 at Punderson- Usually the most packed Sectional, Punderson only has three seeded teams, albeit three quality teams. Southeast, Chagrin Falls, and Independence are all looking to move on. The fourth spot will be up in the air between several schools, including Garrettsville Garfield, Gilmour, LaBrae, Lake Catholic, Lake Center Christian, Perry, and Pymatuning Valley.

Division 2 at The Pines- Keystone will be the team to beat once again but there are several teams that have a shot to advance to Good Park. Canton South, Mineral Ridge, South Range, Springfield, Tuslaw, and West Branch are all hopefuls to make the trip to Akron.

Tuesday, September 29th

Division 1 at Old Avalon- Canfield is the highest seeded team and the favorite at Old Avalon. Hathaway Brown, Kenston, North Royalton, Riverside, and Solon will be competing for the final three spots as this Sectional features the largest amount of D1 seeded teams. Aurora is another team to keep an eye on.

Wednesday, September 30th

Division 1 at Fox Den- Walsh Jesuit, Revere, and Hudson are all Sectional champion hopefuls. Kent Roosevelt and Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin will look to spoil the run for those three teams. Brecksville, Hoban, and Nordonia could also make some noise in Stow.

Who is Anna Phillips?

A name to look out for in the Division 2 golf landscape is Anna Phillips, a freshman at West Geauga High School. Phillips competed on the Wolverines boys team throughout the season but will be participating in the OHSAA tournaments as an individual. She was the number 2 player in West G’s lineup with a nine hole scoring average of 37 and an 18 hole average of 79. She has a legitimate chance to qualify for and compete in the State Championship at Firestone Country Club in October.

Cleveland Metroparks Support High School Golf

I was on my way home from practice a few weeks ago and I noticed there was a match going on that I was interested in watching. I drove up to Little Met just in time to see the conclusion of the tri-match between Rocky River, North Ridgeville, and Buckeye. Along the familiar drive to the course I drove past Mastick Woods and noticed a girls match going on there. The more I thought about it, the more impressed I was with the amount of high school golf played at the Metroparks courses. Big Met hosts a girls sectional as well as several conference and regular season tournaments. A few huge league tournaments were played at Seneca this year, while Manakiki and Shawnee Hills both seem to have matches and tournaments on a regular basis. Each of the Metroparks courses also serves as the home course to several local schools. The entire golf community would like to thank all the people instrumental in making this happen. There are too many individuals to name here, but we definitely would like to offer our gratitude to all of those people.
